Fort Bayard National Cemetery will be holding a Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday, May 29th. There will be a joint color guard of the VVA, American Legion and the Marine Corps to present and retire colors. The ceremony will take place at 10:00 a.m. at 200 Cam De Paz Street in Fort Bayard. The Lordsburg Board of Education recently honored five school board members with New Mexico School Board Association 2023 Excellence in Achievement Awards. Members Rosalia Gomez, Dr. Stephen Lucas, Scott Roberson, Raquel Montiel and Zuelma Gutierrez were recognized for the important role they have played in improving student achievement and success.
The Dollar General Literacy Foundation recently awarded the Silver City Literacy Link Leamos program a grant for $7,500 to help support adult literacy. Each year the foundation awards funds to nonprofit organizations, schools and libraries that support adult, family, summer and youth literacy programs. Literacy Link Leamos in Silver City offers free program services to help individuals improve their skills in basic literacy, GED preparation, English as a second language, reading and much more. The overall mission of the program is to help raise literacy levels in Grant County.
Congratulations to Alex Alfaro of Deming High School who recently signed a letter of intent to play basketball for the Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds in Portales, New Mexico. A special ceremony was held for Mr. Alfaro in front of a crowd of well wishers in the Deming High School Gym. While at Eastern New Mexico College, Alex plans on majoring in physical therapy, kinesiology and sports medicine.
The Lordsburg Elks Lodge is currently accepting torn, tattered and used United States flags. The flags will be properly disposed of during the annual Flag Burning Ceremony in June.
