PNM is offering tips on saving electricity and money as warmer weather arrives. Since the demand for electricity is the highest during the summer months, customers can take steps to decrease their usage and effectively reducing their electric bill. Since cooling adds up to approximately 50% of the monthly electric bill, it is suggested to set the thermostat as high as comfort permits and save 2 to 4% percent on electricity for every degree higher the thermostat is set. In addition, using a programmable thermostat is very helpful. Other tips include:

  • Draw blinds during the day
  • Use ceiling fans to circulate the air
  • Avoid using heat generating devices
  • Make sure air filters are changed for the cooling system

PNM is reminding the public when purchasing a cooling unit for the home, they can receive up to a $300 rebate for some evaporative coolers and up to $400 for some refrigerated units. For more information on energy savings, visit PNM.com\save.

Today is celebrated as Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day starting in the 1860’s to hold tribute to the Civil War’s fallen soldiers. In 1968, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, that established Memorial Day as the last Monday in May, creating a three-day weekend for federal employees. Memorial Day didn’t become an official federal holiday until 1971. We at Silver City Radio would like to give thanks and honor all the men and women who lost their lives while serving in the U.S. military.
