At the time of this report, the New Mexico Department of Health, announced 7,026 New Mexico COVID-19 confirmed positive cases. There have been 177,361 tests performed statewide, 216 current COVID-19 related hospitalizations, and 2,522 cases designated as having recovered according to the Department of Health.  In addition, sadly there has been 320 COVID-19 related deaths recorded statewide. Positive COVID-19 cases in Grant County remain at 16 with 1,612 tests administered, Luna County with 7 cases and 1,270 tests administered, Catron County remaining at 2 with 92 tests administered, and Hidalgo County with 1 confirmed case and 238 administered tests.

The Mimbres Valley Learning Center in Deming will be relocating to a new site purchased by Western New Mexico University located the west side of the city. According to a release, “WNMU purchased 40 acres on West Florida Avenue for the purpose of building a new learning center focused on health care and sustainability to providing broader opportunities for Deming students of all ages.” The project is expected to set a new standard in the southwest for how sustainability and education can work together in creating unique indoor and outdoor learning experiences for students, faculty, and the surrounding community. Possible programs at the new Mimbres Valley Learning Center will include:

  • health services
  • criminal justice
  • social work
  • applied technology
  • Expansion version of the Western New Mexico University Language Institute as well as the university’s Western Institute of Lifelong Learning.

Between 500 and 1,000 students will attend the campus with the potential for a greater population of learners at the strategically located learning center and design of the site has begun with infrastructure construction planned to begin in late 2020.

The Southwest Solid Waste Authority Silver City Landfill located at 318 Ridge Road, will be closed tomorrow, May 27th in order to perform necessary maintenance work on the scales. Regular hours for the landfill will resume on Thursday, May 28th.
