Western New Mexico University is offering a three week summer academy for high school students from the Southwest. The course being studied will be Introduction to Health Science Education and is free to those who meet eligibility requirements. The course will take place June 7th to June 28th, with online instruction and face to face hands-on activities. The Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office was recently recognized for “Excellence in Traffic Safety” by the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NM DOT) and Safer New Mexico Now. The award was based on the department’s outstanding performance during the New Mexico Department of Transportation sponsored overtime grants, conducting three hundred and sixty six hours of enforcement activities to make the community a safer place. 

The Deming Luna County Commission on Aging will hold a public meeting on May 23rd. The meeting will be to provide residents the opportunity to participate in the planning of services and programs for the community. The meeting will take place at the Deming Senior Center at 10:00 a.m. and will be held in both English and Spanish. 

Congratulations to Kylee Renee Jones from Silver City High School who was selected as a New Mexico State Good Citizen Scholarship Award Program candidate. The program and contest is to help encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship. Miss Jones, who is a senior, was awarded this honor having been selected from all high school seniors in Grant County. 

The Catwalk Access Road in Glenwood, New Mexico will be under construction starting this summer. The construction will replace the surface and improve erosion protection along the roadway. The major work that will be done will be gabion construction, concrete paving, reconstruction of low water crossings, asphalt placement and more. To find out more about this project, go to website
