This week, the Town Council of Silver City passed an ordinance adopting an increase of the municipal gross receipts tax in the amount of .3625% for a total tax rate of 8.125%. This was the final GRT increment available to the Town without an election. Individuals shopping in Silver City will pay an additional 37 cents in gross receipts tax for every $100 spent. The motion passed unanimously with the new increase beginning on July 1st.
The New Mexico Human Services Department has announced that families receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits will now be able to use their EBT card to purchase eligible foods at Albertson’s online starting today. During the pandemic, the USDA developed an online purchasing option to make it easier to families to shop for food. The benefits used can be used to purchase eligible food items and not for other associated charges including delivery fees. Amazon and Walmart are authorized online SNAP retailers for all states.
The Strengthening Families Program is now recruiting in Luna County for Parenting Education & Family Skills. This FREE program is for families with youth ages 10-17 who are seeking to improve their family relationship. Participants can choose from a total of 10 classes on Tuesdays or Thursdays from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. starting on April 5th. The free program provides parenting, child, and family life skills to families coping with with problem behaviors, alcohol and/or substance abuse.
