The Grant County Neighborhood Orchards Project has planted new fruit trees for the community to enjoy. The project, which was started by the Grant County Community Health Council, planted their first tree at Sixth Street Elementary in 2015. Since then, trees have been planted at Penny Park, Viola Stone Park, Gough Park, Silver City Recreation Center and many other locations. The goal of the project is to encourage healthy eating habits and this year they have planted cherry, plum, apple, apricot and peach trees. The Orchards Project still continues to grow thanks to the efforts of grant funds and over 3,000 volunteer hours. For more information on the program or how to get involved, call 575-313-3031.
