The National Forest Service, Gila National Forest has announced due to hazardous fire conditions in the Johnson Fire area, an Emergency Area Closure order has been issued by the Gila National Forest for public health and safety. A large portion of the Gila Wilderness is now CLOSED.  In addition, the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument remains closed, and the closure shall remain in effect until rescinded. The Cliff Dwellings National Monument is closed while fire managers implement a burn-out operation for the Johnson Fire. The Johnson fire has covered 45,551 acres at 3 percent containment.

With area temperatures rising, the New Mexico Department of Health is warning residents about the risk of heat-related illness. According to a release, “data analysis by the New Mexico Environmental Public Health Tracking Program of the Epidemiology and Response Division has found that even though a temperature of 86 degrees Fahrenheit may not seem high, this is the temperature at which people start to go to the hospital for heat-related health problems.” Individuals are encouraged to drink lots of water, rest, and get under shade when they are outdoors. These actions are also recommended when playing sports, hiking, fishing, camping or for people who are pregnant or over 65 years of age. In addition, the NMDOH urges New Mexicans to never leave people or pets in a parked car. While running errands, take babies, children, elders, and your pets inside with you.

NAPA Auto Parts in Silver City and the Santa Clara Action Committee are hosting a free “Music in Park” event on Friday, June 25th from 6:30 to 9:00 P.M. in Viola Stone Park in Santa Clara. The local American Legion Marine Corps will present the colors, and there will be vendors, special guests, and music by The Illusion Band. Admission is free.
