The Johnson Fire located at Johnson Canyon, west of McKenna park, 11 miles west of the Gila Cliff Dwellings has reached 46,790 acres and contained at 3 percent. Yesterday, fire activity increased on the southeastern and western perimeters of the fire with Sycamore Canyon seeing the most activity. Fire in White Rocks Canyon experienced modest growth with additional movement into Nat Straw Canyon. Firefighters completed a burn-out operation around Miller Spring Cabin creating a safety zone around the cabin.

The local Give Grandly Coalition has announced that the Give Grandly-Give Local 2021 annual fundraiser held on May 8th for area non-profits beat its own record with the highest level of donations by receiving $260,685. The 59 participating non-profits will now be able to move forward by using the donations to better help the community with scholarships, food pantry services, historic preservation, the promotion of education, literacy, and much more.  Matching funds were provided by: Freeport-McMoran; United Way of Southwest New Mexico; James Edd Hughs; Kevin Johnson and Neil McDonald of Edward Jones Investments; Janey Katz & Suzi Calhoun; Robert Rydeski of Rydeski & Co.; Pauli Galin of Sherman Community Foundation in Deming; Dan Otero of Hidalgo Medical Services; Dan Cook of Better Homes & Gardens; and Grant County Crime Stoppers. In addition, a grant from the McCune Charitable Foundation made it possible for the Give Grandly Coalition to develop a new website. The total amount of funds raised over the eight years of Give Grandly has topped a million dollars.

The Murray Ryan Visitors Center in Downtown Silver City has reopened to the public after closing due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The center is open for in-person service from 9:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. Monday through Saturday and 10:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. on Sundays. In addition, the center will be holding an open house from on Friday June 19th through Saturday, June 19th. Visitors can view some news displays and pick up maps and brochures concerning area attractions.
