In Gila National Forest news, as of 6:00 A.M. this morning, the Black Fire has covered 292,770 acres with 49% containment. A total of 893 personnel is working the fire. The Grant County Sheriff’s Department has a new remodeled and relocated public lobby in the Grant County Administrative Building. The public may now access the lobby through the main building entrance and follow the hallway to the left. The lobby door will remain open from 8:00 to 5:00 P.M. Monday through Friday. The office is closed on weekends and holidays. Visitors must now park in the main parking lot in front of the building, there is no longer any public parking on the east side of the building within the fenced area. The Grant County Sheriff’s Department is located at 1400 Highway 180 East in Silver City. Remember to dial 911 for emergencies only. For non-emergency services please call Grant County Dispatch at 575-388-8840.
The Fort Bayard Historic Preservation Society has honored Ansel Walters of Silver City the to be “Volunteer of the Year” for 2022. The society’s board of directors recognized Mr. Walters for his consistent devotion to the saving and telling the story of historic Fort Bayard. In addition to giving of his time and support of many activities, he physically assists with repairs and shares stories of the frontier cavalry with visitors in the living history program.
