According to reports compiled by the New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions, the total number of unemployment insurance claimants receiving payment or pending certification was 124,903 as of May 15th. in addition, most claimants (100,579 people, or 80.5 percent of all claimants) were eligible under the standard Unemployment Insurance Program, with the remaining receiving either Pandemic Unemployment Assistance, Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation, or Trade Readjustment Allowance. The number of claimants by local counties are as follows:

  • Grant County with 1,419 claimants
  • Luna County with 1,680 claimants
  • Catron County with 68 claimants
  • Hidalgo County with 74 claimants

Highlights included that 1 in 4 claimants were between the ages of 25 and 34, more than 1 in 6 worked in food prep and serving related field, and nearly 1 in 5 claimants worked in the accommodation and food service industry.

The public is invited to come stroll Bullard Street, in downtown Silver City this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, 10am to 8pm, to celebrate that Silver City and Grant County are “uniquely open.” The public is encouraged to love local in a new way, even though businesses cannot operate at full occupancy. A section of Bullard Street will be closed to vehicle traffic to allow for increased outside capacity for restaurants and retailers. The Town of Silver City, Grant County, and the Silver City Grant County Chamber of Commerce along with MainStreet, in support of all businesses in Grant County, are encouraging you to support local businesses. There will be music, street dining and regular dining, art, demonstrations, and more. The public is reminded to wear a facemask and keep social distancing of 6 feet.
