In Gila National Forest news, as of 6:00 A.M. this morning, the Black Fire has covered 254,840 acres with 25% containment. There is an in-person public meeting scheduled at 6:00 P.M. at the Sapillo Creek Volunteer Fire Department. As a reminder, the Gila National Forest has implemented amended Stage 2 Fire Restrictions due to the high fire danger and persistent severe fire weather conditions. There are NO open fires allowed on the Gila even in campgrounds or recreation sites. This includes NO propane fuel devices. Please stop by your ranger station for more information. The Kiwanis Club of Silver City has awarded their Annual Key Club Senior Achievement Scholarships to three local students. Each scholarship recipient was a member of Key Club in their respective schools and were judged according to academic achievements, involvement with Key Club, community involvement, and educational plans. Today’s featured student is Daniel Martinez, of Cobre High School. He was presented with a $1,000 scholarship from the Kiwanis Club of Silver City. Daniel stated that the most meaningful service project he participated in was “The Buddy Walk” in 2018 where people in the community came together to support individuals and families with Downs Syndrome. Daniel plans to attend New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology this Fall to major in mechanical engineering. Further plans include to work at Sandia Labs performing research and work with military technology or related fields. Congratulations to Daniel Martinez of Cobre High School! Tomorrow, June 2nd, Freeport McMoRan will be hosting a Mining Job Fair at the Grant County Conference Center from 7:00 A.M. to 12 noon. Individuals should be prepared for on the spot interviews and potential same day job offers.
