Western New Mexico University’s Online Program was recently ranked as one of the most affordable programs in the nation by Best Colleges dot com. The evaluation calculated the cost of tuition, the average amount of financial aid students receive and the amount of debt accrued for an online education. WNMU was ranked within the top 5 institutions around the country.

Hidalgo County will be holding a public input meeting on June 14th regarding the Infrastructure Capital Improvement Plan. This is an opportunity for the community to make suggestions on potential items that the governing board can seek funding for. Congratulations to Brisa Kayser, a recent Deming High School graduate, who was selected to be a member of the New Mexico State University Aggies cheer squad. Miss Kayser cheered at the varsity level all four years she attended high school and earned All-American status her freshman year through the Universal Cheer Association (UCA). While cheering for the Aggies, she plans on attending Dona Ana Community College to study Dental Hygiene. 

The Silver City Public Library will be having a “Teen Party” on Friday, June 16th. The event will have food, video games, entertainment and more. It will take place from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and is free to all teens. For more information call 575-538-3672.

The LS Mesa fire, as of June 12th is 60% contained. The Fire started on June 9th and is located 9 miles east of Gila, New Mexico and the Gila National Forest. Due to high winds, the fire has grown to 132 acres and the cause is under investigation. Ground crews are engaged in containment line construction on all sides of the fire perimeter and working in the interior, identifying and extinguishing sources of heat that could threaten to escape the fire’s perimeter. Tomorrow, June 14th is National New Mexico Day! To celebrate, New Mexicans are encouraged to explore the state, try something new and shop local in honor of the Land of Enchantment. New Mexican residents will have free access to any 35 NM state parks, any of the 8 state-operated museums and 7 historic sites. Also, New Mexicans can share their favorite pictures, memories and reasons they love NM on social media using the hashtag National New Mexico Day. So go out on Wednesday, the 14th and see all the wonderful things New Mexico has to offer.
