In Gila National Forest news, as of 6:30 A.M. this morning, the Black Fire has covered 311,692 acres with 47% containment. There are currently 1,019 personnel working the fire. According to released wildfire information on inciweb, “crews will continue patrolling and mopping up, constructing direct and indirect control lines, prepping new line where needed and using point protection tactics to protect private property, critical infrastructure, and other values at risk with emphasis being along HWY 152. Road and trail closures are in effect throughout the fire area. Forest Service Road 150 is closed to public access approximately 2 miles north of its junction with Highway 35 at the North Star Helispot.” In addition, the public can obtain current state and federal fire restriction information across New Mexico at NM Fire Info dot com.
In other Gila National Forest news, new fires began over the weekend. The Adam Fire emerged on Friday, June 10th southeast of Reserve and at the time of this report is fully contained to 225 acres. The Skates Fire started on Saturday June 11th, approximately 15 miles northeast of Silver City and at the time of this report is 80% contained at 111 acres. The Signal Fire started by a lightning strike yesterday and was quickly contained to one acre near Signal Peak.
Silver City Mainstreet has completed three projects funded by the New Mexico Tourism Department’s Clean and Beautiful Grant Program. According to a news release, the projects include new landscaping at the Murray Ryan Visitor’s Center, streetscape improvement on Bullard Street, and a mural adjacent to the Main Street Plaza. The Clean and Beautiful Grant Program funds projects and initiatives that contributes goals identified through Keep America Beautiful and the Litter Control and Beautification Act.
