Park Rangers at the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument are asking the public for cooperation during the July 4th holiday weekend. In light of the current situation with COVID-19 and area wildfires, visitors are encouraged to recreate responsibly by following some these important guidelines.
- If the trailhead is busy and people are waiting, choose an alternate hike
- Stay on trail to preserve fragile ecosystems
- Pack out all trash and take it home with you
- If you are feeling sick, delay your trip
- Maintain at least 6 ft of distance between yourself and other hikers
- Plan ahead for limited visitor information services
In addition, the following facilities remain closed at this time: Gila Visitor Center & Trailhead Museum; and Visitor Center bathrooms and Comfort Stations throughout the Gila National Forest.
In an action taken for the protection of the health, welfare, and safety of the community at-large, and more particularly to the inhabitants and visitors within the Town during the COVID-19 outbreak, the Silver City Town Manager in consultation with the Mayor, has ordered that all town owned property within the boundaries of Silver City shall be closed to public entrance and use beginning on Friday, July 3rd at 12:00 P.M. and ending on Sunday, July 5th at 11:59 P.M. The restrictions of entry and use do not apply to public rights-of-way, designated trails and open spaces, and the golf course and ball fields at Scott Park. In addition, this Order does not apply to law enforcement and public employees in conduct of their lawful duties. Pursuant to Municipal Code, a violation of an Order of the Town Manager is a criminal misdemeanor, subject to the penalties prescribed by said Code.
In addition, Grant County has announced that due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the Governor’s current order against large gatherings, the parking lot located at the Grant County Administrative Offices will be closed to the public this Friday July 3rd and Saturday July 4th. Barricades will be in place and law enforcement personnel will be monitoring the area for everyone’s safety.
The Town of Silver City will be having an expanded 1 and 1/2 hour live fireworks show on the evening of July 4th. During the fireworks, tune in to KNFT-FM 102.9 and KSCQ-FM 92.9 for a patriotic music show. Don’t forget to continue social distancing while enjoying the fireworks display.
