The New Mexico Human Services Department has announced that households receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits will again receive the maximum amount for their household size for the month of July. New Mexico SNAP households will automatically receive the additional allotment in the same way they receive their current benefits and the July supplemental will be available to SNAP recipients on their regular issuance date.

The Forest Service, Gila National Forest has alerted the public that the Quemado Ranger District has discovered an uptick of illegal wood cutting on the north end of the Gila National Forest, near the Arizona state line. According to a release, illegal wood cutting results in user-created roads, trash, campfires during a campfire ban, and resource damage. The public is urged to help when purchasing wood from a seller by checking the following:

  • Look and see if there are permit tags attached to the load
  • If there aren’t any tags – ask the seller where the wood came from

In an action taken for the protection of the health, welfare, and safety of the community at-large, and more particularly to the inhabitants and visitors within the Town during the COVID-19 outbreak, the Silver City Town Manager in consultation with the Mayor, has ordered that all town owned property within the boundaries of Silver City shall be closed to public entrance and use beginning on Friday, July 3rd at 12:00 P.M. and ending on Sunday, July 5th at 11:59 P.M. The restrictions of entry and use do not apply to public rights-of-way, designated trails and open spaces, and the golf course and ball fields at Scott Park. In addition, this Order does not apply to law enforcement and public employees in conduct of their lawful duties. Pursuant to Municipal Code, a violation of an Order of the Town Manager is a criminal misdemeanor, subject to the penalties prescribed by said Code.

In addition, Grant County has announced that due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the Governor’s current order against large gatherings, the parking lot located at the Grant County Administrative Offices will be closed to the public this Friday July 3rd and Saturday July 4th. Barricades will be in place and law enforcement personnel will be monitoring the area for everyone’s safety.
