The Gila National Forest has been working with volunteers from Trout Unlimited, Mesilla Valley Flyfishers, Amigos Bravos and other conservation groups to help restore Little Turkey Creek, which is part of the Willow Creek Restoration Project. So far, volunteers have installed dozens of instream rock structures, filled two large headcuts that were beginning to erode adjacent wetlands and planted more than 300 willow cuttings to help improve wildlife habitat. According to the Acting Glenwood District Ranger, the goal of the restoration project is to help restore instream and riparian habitat that will one day support a naturally reproducing Gila trout population. For more information on the project, visit the Gila National Forest website.
