Luna County 4-H Shooting Sports youths recently competed in Raton, where they were able to showcase their talent and sportsmanship. The Rifle team, which includes Monte Offutt, Joshua Wilkinson, Audrey Donaldson and Issac Gamboa were able to clinch second place, with Monte earning an individual fourth place certificate. Also, both Luna county archery teams were able to make their mark by placing in the top ten. Congratulations to all team members. 

Grant, Luna and Hidalgo Counties are reminding all residents that the second half of Property Tax Bills payments are due by tomorrow, May 10th. For your convenience payments can be made online either through the Grant, Luna or Hidalgo County website, via automated phone system or by visiting your county’s Treasurer’s office. For more information, contact your County Clerk’s office. 

The Luna County Road Department would like to inform the public that final preparations are underway to complete the repaving of McCan Road Southeast. Construction is already underway to set the grade and prepare the subgrade for chip seal operations between Solana Road Southeast and Rockhound Road. Crews have begun applying chip seal and will continue until May 24th. Additional paving will continue throughout the summer as weather permits. 

Like to talk to people about the Gila? The Heart of the Gila is looking for Centennial Ambassadors/Volunteers who are interested in doing pop up education for visitors to the Gila. Those interested can volunteer to educate others on the Catwalk, Cliff Dwellings, Lake Roberts and more. Simple training, volunteer stipend and mileage reimbursement will be provided. Mail carriers and the U.S. Postal Service are joining forces this Saturday, May 11th for the annual “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive. In New Mexico, Deming, Grant County and 17 other communities are set to participate. Community members interested in participating are to leave a box or bag with nonperishable items by their mailbox before mail delivery on May 11th or can take the donation directly to their local USPS office. Donations made will go directly to local food pantries in each county.
