Grant County Office of Emergency Management has announced the activation of a new wildfire detection camera system for the 2026 fire season. The system includes six cameras installed throughout Grant County by PNM that operate continuously year-round and are monitored through the ALERTWest early detection platform. The cameras conduct 360-degree scans every two to three minutes and use near-infrared technology at night to detect heat or light anomalies. 

A public meeting regarding the Chino Administrative Order on Consent (AOC) is scheduled for May 12 at 6:00 p.m. at the Bayard Community Center to provide an update on AOC-related activities and progress. The AOC is a voluntary agreement between the New Mexico Environment Department and Freeport-McMoRan Chino Mines Company aimed at assessing and, if necessary, addressing potential environmental and public health impacts associated with historic mining operations. Areas of focus include soil conditions in Hurley, the smelter and tailings areas, as well as impacts involving Whitewater Creek, Hanover Creek, and the Lampbright area.

Silver City’s “Pick It Up – Toss No Más” April Community Litter Cleanup brought together local volunteers to improve community spaces and reduce litter throughout the area. A total of 29 volunteers contributed more than 69 hours of service, collecting 635 pounds of litter and debris from locations including Big Ditch Park, San Vicente Creek, and surrounding roads and parks. The effort included support from the Daughters of the American Revolution, the San Vicente Consortium, and other community organizations, reflecting a strong collaborative commitment to maintaining a clean and vibrant environment in Silver City.
