Pick-It Up-Toss No Mas is inviting the community to their “Trick-or-Trash” Community Cleanup event tomorrow, October 14th. Volunteers are encouraged to wear their most enchanting Halloween costume for a chance to win a prize. Those interested in volunteering are to meet at the Grant County Community Foundation parking lot in Silver City at 9:00 a.m. After the cleanup, all trash and recyclables will be recorded, and those with the most trash collected will be rewarded.
The Federal Highway Administration, along with the New Mexico Department of Transportation and the Gila National Forest will be hosting an informational public meeting on Monday, October 16th to discuss construction activities that will be coming to New Mexico Highway 17, the Catwalk Access Road. This project was initiated through the New Mexico Department of Transportation’s 2015 application to the Federal Lands Access Program funds to explore providing safe, reliable and resilient access to the Catwalk Trail. The meeting will take place from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Glenwood Community Center and is open to the public.
The Silver City’s Museum’s fall community presentation lineup offers a rich exploration into the cultural diversity of southwest New Mexico and will be taking place throughout the month of October. The series will feature discussions on the Apache Slaves, Hispanic art, and the history of the Chihuahua Hill, one of the oldest Hispanic neighborhoods in Silver City. These presentations will take place at Western New Mexico University, in the Besse Forward Global Resource Center’s ABC Room. The New Mexico Department of Transportation District One office in cooperation with Mountain States Constructors, Inc. is announcing the upcoming roadway resurfacing project on US 180 and New Mexico 90. Beginning Monday, October 16th, the company will begin making roadway resurfacing repairs along US 180, which will cause various daytime lane closures on both the eastbound and westbound lanes. Once complete, repairs on NM 90 south of Silver City will begin causing lane closures in both the northbound and southbound lanes from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. The rehabilitation project was awarded $5.5 million and is expected to be completed in mid-November.

The Animas FFA and Animas Elementary School recently went on a field trip to Massey Farms’ Corn Field this past week to learn about the different aspects of farming. The students were able to visit the Massey Farms corn field and grain bins where corn is stored after it is harvested and learned about farming and the different pieces of equipment used, such as the combine, also known as the “Big Red Harvester. This trip was part of the “Outside Learning Opportunities” program that is provided to students in the Animas area.
