In honor of “National Fire Prevention Week” the Silver City Fire Department will be giving tours at both fire stations on Friday, October 13th. Tours will last around thirty minutes and will include a tour of the station living quarters, a walk-through of their fire engine and a demonstration of a firefighter wearing bunker gear and an air pack. Congratulations to Arlene Sarkela who was recently honored by the Preceptor Tau Chapter in Silver City for her 50 years of service and membership to Beta Sigma Phi. Members of the chapter gathered in the traditional “Golden Circle Ritual” to present Mrs. Sarkela with a gold-plated rose and a Certificate of Honor. Throughout her years of membership, she has served in all offices, chaired many committees and continues to remain active with the Grant County Art Guild where she is known for her creative paintings. 

The Grant County Archaeological Society and the Mimbres Culture Heritage Site will be celebrating “Archaeology Day” with a presentation by Archaeologist and Historian Karl Laumbach on Saturday, October 14th. Mr. Laumbach will be talking about “Hembrillo, An Apache Battlefield of the Victorio War”. The presentation will take place at 4:00 p.m. at the Mimbres Roundup Lodge and is free and open to the public. 

Lordsburg High School students, Pablo Aguilar, Natali Caldera, Stephanie Montez, Arianna Tovar and Bella Heller recently took second place in the 2023 “Quiz Bowl” that took place in Ruidoso last weekend. The students were able to defeat five other teams which automatically qualified them for the national competition which will take place in Chicago in April. Congratulations and good luck to all five students at the national competition.

The New Mexico Healthy Food Financing Fund (HFFF) is accepting applications to help support New Mexico food retailers, food processors, food producers and food hub/distributors. The purpose of the  Healthy Food Financing Fund is to support the intersection of economic development in New Mexico’s food and agriculture sector with increased food security for New Mexicans. The program also is an integral part of the governor’s Food Initiative and prioritizes food retail in rural and underserved communities to help provide alternative market channels for value-add and sustainable agriculture.
