The lightning-caused Sacaton Fire, first detected June 21 in the Gila Wilderness, has grown to an estimated 5,546 acres as of July 3. The Gila Las Cruces Type 3 Incident Management Team assumed command of the Sacaton Fire today as firefighters continue using indirect tactics to protect the Willow Creek Subdivision and the Mogollon Baldy Lookout and communications site. Additional resources have been ordered to support containment efforts after the fire expanded northeast Thursday into the southwest corner of the earlier Hummingbird Fire burn area. Steep terrain, heavy fuels, active fire behavior, and limited access continue to prevent direct firefighting operations.

The Southwest Solid Waste Authority has completed a $20,000 grant from the New Mexico Environment Department’s Recycling and Illegal Dumping Grant Program, using the funding to purchase 22 new cardboard recycling bins. The new bins have replaced damaged containers at existing business accounts, allowing older bins to be refurbished and expand commercial recycling services across Grant County. Nearly 140 businesses already participate in the program, and the additional bins will help divert more cardboard from the landfill while increasing recycling opportunities for local businesses and residents through existing public drop-off locations.
