Western New Mexico University’s new Outreach and Instruction Librarian Madeleine Nittmo has been helping students, faculty and staff to better understand the amount of resources available at the J. Cloyd Miller Library. Some of the new resources she is helping instruct are “Boundless”, which is a service that provides audio books and eBooks and “Alexander Street”, a streaming service that includes a number of documentaries that instructors can attract directly into their Canvas shells. One of the new projects she is working on, is establishing a library presence in Deming where she plans to offer instructional sessions to nursing students at the John Arthur and Janette Smith Educational Center and to also set up a small circulating library at the Mimbres Learning Center.

The Hurley Town Council has agreed to use the 2024 budget surplus to cover the increasing fees from third-party utility service providers. Although fees have increased over the last several years, the town of Hurley has been able to cover them instead of passing them on to the residents. As a result of the fees being covered, Hurley residents’ water bills will not change for another year, except for those who elected to receive an additional bin for $5 a month. The Hurley Town Council will review the budget and fees in mid-2025.

The Silver City based non-profit organization Crooked Forest Institute recently received a $200,000 grant from the Tides Foundation to help build affordable housing on a local Community Land Trust. The organization plans on using the funds to finalize the purchase of 32 acres for their education campus in Grant County to help establish a foundation for their future programs and to develop the capacity to have a positive impact on the creation of healthy and affordable neighborhoods in Grant County. Overall, the grant will be dedicated to furthering Crooked Forest’s mission by securing the location of their 32-acre education campuses, developing the messaging of their vision, articulating both landscape and architectural design plans and establishing a Community Land Trust.
