This week, Representative Gabe Vasuqez visited the southwest, meeting with business owners and officials in Silver City, Deming, and Columbus. Also, this week, Senator Siah Correa Hemphill, working together with state officials and community leaders, secured $375,000 in emergency funding to help clean and repair acequias damaged from the Black Fire that burned over 325,000 acres in the summer of 2022 and subsequent flooding that lasted through September. While some infrastructure repairs like washed out roads were addressed more immediately, other repairs have been stalled due to issues with accessing state disaster relief dollars.

In news from the Silver City Gospel Mission, recently the Town of Silver City provided the mission a brand new commercial stove. This equipment was very needed and will be used in the soup kitchen that will help ensure meals for those in need.
In celebration of National FFA week and so many of our youth involved with FFA at the local level, we wanted to share a little more about FFA from our coverage yesterday of local students serving in district offices. FFA stands for Future Farmers of America–an intracurricular student organization for those interested in agriculture and leadership. FFA is not just for students who want to be production farmers, FFA also welcomes members who aspire to careers as teachers, doctors, scientists, business owners and more. In New Mexico there are over 4,600 members in over 85 schools. Many highschool students from our area have held significant leadership roles within FFA at the district, state, and national level. In 2010-11, Shannon Norris, from Cliff FFA, served as the National Western Region Vice-President.
