Jack Brennan, Tour of the Gila Race Director, has announced that the 2021 Tour of the Gila has been cancelled. According to a news release, Mr. Brennan stated “I am saddened and emotional about making this decision, but I know it is the right decision. The health and welfare of our participants and community is paramount. With the rise in COVID and our area being ranked at the highest transmission rate, it would not be wise to continue.” In addition, he commented that the local health care community has been very open and honest with him and that it played an instrumental role in providing the knowledge to make the difficult decision. The Tour of the Gila is one of the most challenging stage races in North America and this year would have been the 35th addition. Going forward, Jack Brennan now focused on the 2022 Tour of the Gila that is scheduled for April 27th through May 1st, 2022.
The local Commission on Aging in Luna County is seeking a new board member. The position requires experience of serving on boards with preference of knowledge of non-profit organizations. The Commission on Aging is governed by a policy-making board of directors whose essential function is to ensure the legal and ethical integrity of the organization and maintenance of accountability. Letters of Interest and resumes are being accepted beginning today through this Friday, Sept. 3rd at the Deming Senior Center located at 800 South Granite Street in Deming.
Tomorrow, Will Hawkins, the new Silver Consolidated Schools Superintendent, will be the guest speaker at the Silver City Rotary Club Meeting. Mr. Hawkins will talk about plans foe the use of mil levy funds for needed improvements in Silver Schools facilities. The Silver City Rotary Club meets every Tuesday at noon in the Sunset Room in the Western New Mexico Student cafeteria.
