Western New Mexico University will be dedicating its recently installed sculpture of former faculty member Pam Kuthe on Monday August 28th, at 3:30 p.m. in front of the School of Nursing building. Mrs. Kuthe, who retired from WNMU in 2007, was a long-time Silver City nurse, a dedicated educator and a valued colleague. She was also recognized as a Nursing Legend by the New Mexico Center for Nursing Excellence and was pivotal in establishing the modern nursing program at WNMU, which graduated its first class of associate degree students in 1993.
The Deming Luna County Commission on Aging is having a photo contest to celebrate their 45th Annual Conference of Aging that will take place in September. They are accepting photos in categories such as hometown pride, cutest pet, then and now and generations photos. There is no limit on entries and all photos must be submitted by August 25th. The New Mexico Tourism Department is awarding nearly $3.5 million to 46 local governments and tourism-related communities across New Mexico through the department’s Cooperative Marketing Grant Program (CoOp) for the upcoming year. Grant County will be receiving $50,568 of those funds to help advertise local destinations, attractions and events in Silver City and surrounding communities. The CoOp program was created to help grow New Mexico’s tourism economy by creating strategies that will bring more tourists to small communities throughout the state.
The United States Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) recently awarded over $611,000 in Fiscal Year 2023 to New Mexico through the Specialty Crop Block Grant Funding Program (SCBGP). The grant will help the New Mexico Department of Agriculture fund projects that enhance the competitiveness of specialty crop products and create new market opportunities for the state’s specialty crop producers. The SCBGP funding to New Mexico is part of a total of $72.9 million that has been awarded to 54 states and territories. The funding for the SCBGP grants is authorized by the 2018 Farm Bill and the Fiscal Year 2023 funding will be awarded for a three-year period beginning Sept. 30th.
The Grant County Road Department will begin Chip Sealing in Silver City on Monday, August 28th. Santa Rita Mine, Tabor Avenue, Apache Street and Broken Arrow are the roads that will be worked on, therefore drivers are encouraged to be patient and drive carefully.
