Hidalgo Medical Services has announced that have welcomed back seniors for in-person dining congregate meals in Grant and Hidalgo County. To be eligible, seniors must be 60 years of age or older or a spouse of a 60-year old senior. In addition, a registration form must be completed by all participants who come to lunch for the first time, temperatures will be taken at the door prior to entrance and masks will be required. Locations of the senior centers are the Ena Mitchell Senior Center in Lordsburg, the Silver City Senior Center, and the Santa Clara Senior Center. Lunch is served on weekdays and reservations are required. All schedules and information are available online by visiting https://hms-nm.org/ and clicking on the Senior Services tab. According to a news release, HMS Senior Services has provided over 160,000 meals to approximately 1,000 seniors in Grant and Hidalgo County during the pandemic.
The PNM Resources Foundation has collectively awarded $290,000 to 29 non-profits statewide for their work toward improving the quality of life of many New Mexicans needing help with affordable housing , achieving independence and self-sufficiency, and breaking the cycle of substance abuse or homelessness. Locally in Silver City, El Refugio, Inc., and Supporting People in Need’s Seasonal Overnight Shelter received grants from this program to further their missions in the community.
WNMU’s longest standing tradition, The Great Race will be celebrating their 55th year on April 22nd and 23rd with student festivities, the customary human-powered cart races, and two evening of outdoor music dubbed GR55 Live. Alec Benjamin, will headline on Friday evening with Alexa Villa opening and legendary East LA Rock n Roll Hall of Famers Los Lobos, will headline on Saturday night with Tejano great Ram Herrera opening. Tickets are available at https://admin.wnmu.edu/cultural/. Those 17 and under will be admitted free both nights. WNMU students, faculty and staff will be admitted free with Mustang ID.
