This is a reminder that today is a day you can have your voice heard when you vote. Polls remain open until 7pm.

There are two fires burning in the area, which include the Meadow fire, that started June 3rd, and the Buzzard Fire, that started May 22nd , which both are believed to have been human caused.  The Meadow fire, near Signal Peak lookout is at 160 acres and the Buzzard fire near Reserve is around 35,000 acres. Grant County Commission plans to vote this coming week on the future of the Gila Regional Medical Center.  We will keep you posted on the outcome of this decision.

There are two airlines biding for the federal Essential Air Service contract to connect the Grant County Airport to larger airports. Boutique Air has been servicing the region, but complaints have continued to grow regarding their service with delays and cancellations. The annual contract to Boutique Air was for $3.5 million.  Boutique Air, along with another company, Advanced Air, hopes to be awarded the contract. The United States Department of Transportation will decide which of the two bids is accepted, but will also be taking into consideration input from the Grant County Commission.

A former golfer and assistant coach from WNMU will be playing in the 118th US Golf Championship next week in Southhampton, New York. Calum Hill, a 2016 graduate of WNMU, just completed his MBA and served as WNMU assistant golf coach for the past two years after a brilliant career for the Mustangs. Hill was the runner-up at NMSU’s local qualifier last month before moving on the sectionals. After his 2016 NCAA Championship runner-up finish, he won several pro events last summer in preparation for a career in golf that has tremendous potential. His last start was a runner-up in last week’s Scottsdale Open. The US Open will be played June 14th through 17th over 72 hole
