Celebrating Hidalgo Medical Services’ Family Medicine Residency Program Graduates
Hidalgo Medical Services (HMS) is Southwestern New Mexico’s leading Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC). Last Saturday, June 25, HMS’ Family Medicine Residency Program recognized its second class of rural-trained and exceptionally-qualified Family Medicine residents. Upon graduation, they will become board certified Family Medicine physicians and one physician will continue to call Silver City “home” as a full-time Family Practice Physician with HMS.
“Family Practice Physicians serves as the backbone to the health and well-being of our community,” stated Darrick Nelson, MD, HMS Chief Medical Officer and Director of the Family Medicine Residency Program. “Community health centers, such as HMS, treat patients for a fraction of the cost in comparison to other care delivery models, such as emergency room care. We at HMS are very proud of our record of achievement,” added Nelson.
Dan Otero, HMS CEO, noted, “HMS is a leader in New Mexico and the nation as an innovative provider of integrated, team-based, and patient-centered health care. Our goal is to treat the whole patient, through comprehensive and affordable medical, dental, mental health and family support services.” Otero stated, “Regional and state partners, such as Gila Regional Medical Center, local community providers, the University of New Mexico, Memorial Medical Center, and the Southwest Center for Health Innovation, allow HMS to serve its patients and communities effectively. HMS could not continue its work without the ongoing support of its Board of Directors, state and national legislators, and recognition from national agencies, such as the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).”
In the shared effort to apply recommendations of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) “Triple Aim” approach (as listed below), HMS continues to support the following issues:
- Improving the experience of care,
- Improving the health of populations, and
- Reducing per capita costs of health care.
The HMS FMRP is directly providing highly-trained doctors to stay and practice in rural communities, such as Hidalgo and Grant counties. HMS congratulates Alan Schumacher, MD and Rachel Seltzer, MD on their graduation from HMS’ Family Medicine Residency Program.
