Here’s a look at some local news:
The Grant County “Complete Count Committee” has been created to help ensure a complete 2020 U.S. Census count for Grant County. In a news release issued by the Town of Silver City, the committee’s goal is to count every single person in Grant County, including babies and children, and undocumented immigrants. The U.S Constitution requires that the census occur every 10 years, and the data gathered from it is used to determine how some $675 billion in federal funding is allocated to vital human services, such as housing, health care, food stamps and many other programs. Census data also determines how many Congressional representatives each state gets, as well as how Congressional and state legislative districts are drawn. Historically, New Mexico’s population has been undercounted in the census process, due in part to its vast and remote rural areas. In 2010, New Mexico’s response rate was the second lowest in the country, and some two percent of the population went missing in the 2000 census. Local residents may apply to become a census worker. The pay is $16.50 per hour and includes paid training, flexible work hours, mileage reimbursement and other approved expenses. The City of Deming featured their annual Christmas Lighted Parade last weekend with plenty of light decorated floats from local businesses and community groups in addition to the Deming High School Marching Band. The parade and festivities were organized by Deming Mainstreet. A community tree lighting followed the parade at the historic Luna County Courthouse.
The Grant County Sheriff’s Department hosted a graduation ceremony for the DARE program last night at Cobre High School where over one hundred 5th graders gathered to receive gifts and certificates. The DARE program stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education and helps give kids the skills they need to avoid involvement in drugs, gangs, and violence. D.A.R.E was founded in 1983 and has been implemented in thousands of schools throughout the United States and in over 50 countries.
