The Grant and Quay Soil and Water Conservation Districts recently awarded sponsorships to three Grant County 4-H members who attended a week-long State 4-H Conference in Las Cruces. The students, Randi White, Kolby Taylor and Justin Billings, comprised of the team that won first place in the Land Judging Contest this year. According to a release, the soil and water conservation districts award annual scholarships to encourage students to pursue careers in the Range Science areas and in addition to promote awareness of soil and water conservation districts’ mission to protect, restore, enhance, and promote the wise-use of natural resources. The awards are made in the categories of Homesite, Forestry, Agronomy, Land, Range and Wildlife. Prior to receiving the sponsorship monies, the students are required to make a presentation to their local SWCD about the competition.
This year’s Great American Duck Race was huge success over the weekend in Deming. Thousands of visitors enjoyed food, games and entertainment in addition to the famed duck races on wet and dry tracks. The winner of the wet track race was 12-year old Nicole Jasso, a student at Red Mountain Middle School. The winner of the dry track race was Lucia Cervantes of El Paso. Each winner was awarded a purse of $1,420.00.
Congresswoman Xochitl Torres Small of New Mexico District 2, visited Silver City last week and participated in a round table discussion with several members of the Silver City Grant County Chamber. According to the Grant County Beat, Representative Torres Small stated she is dedicated to find ways for young people to find opportunities in their own communities, and has received many questions regarding minimum wage, health insurance costs, investing in trades and skills, and border issues. The session was represented by individuals in mining, internet technology, insurance, restaurants, utilities, retail, and the hospital. Torres Small has been visiting communities in southern New Mexico to discuss topics on the minds of citizens and answering their questions.
