Here’s a look at today’s headlines:
Grant County resident, Jeramie Carrillo, organized a community supply drive to aid victims of Hurricane Harvey, that struck Texas late last month. This humanitarian effort resulted in the collection of several tons of needed items and non-perishable food and water. As word of this effort spread to local residents, some businesses offered a helping hand that included Transformers Nutrition, City Cuts Barbershop, and the Buckhorn, in addition to several area churches. Mr. Carrillo also will be picking up supplies from people residing in Cliff, Lordsburg, Deming and Belen and is planning a second trip to Texas in order to deliver all the collected items.
The New Mexico State Police has canceled a Silver Alert for Leland Lane Stovall, a man who was reported seen in Deming Thursday morning. The alert was issued last Friday. Mr. Stovall has been located and is reported to be safe.
The Southwest New Mexico Border Security Task Force met in Hidalgo County last week to report updates from U.S. Customs and Border Protection stations in Deming, Lordsburg, and Santa Teresa. The meeting was attended by residents and included, U.S Senators Martin Heinrich and Tom Udall, in addition to U.S. Representative, Steve Pearce. Lordsburg reported a 38 percent drop in apprehensions over last year, and a decrease in drive-throughs, whereby smugglers cross the border by driving vehicles over ramps, through holes cut in fencing, or across areas without fencing. The Deming station reported that apprehensions were down by 70 percent and marijuana interceptions were down by 30 percent. The Santa Teresa patrol station reported that apprehensions have dropped significantly while narcotics seizures remain typically low. Other items covered in the meeting included the need for additional personnel, the presentation of new technology being utilized in Lordsburg, and various areas of new and upgraded border fencing.
We have continued to cover The New Mexico Public Education Department release of annual grades for area schools. This week we report that Aldo Leopold Charter School in Silver City raised a grade from a “C” in 2016 to a “B” this year.
The recent Labor Day weekend was filled with local events and activities. Downtown Silver City was the venue for the 2nd Annual Southwest Print Fiesta which hosted individual booths featuring print art creations, including a special demonstration of a street steamroller press. In addition to the print fiesta, the public was treated to foods from numerous Downtown Silver City restaurants at “The Taste of Downtown” event. The Grant County Gem and Mineral Society, presented its annual Gem and Mineral Show at the Grant County Veterans Memorial Business and Conference Center and the Village of Santa Clara hosted a Community Fiesta that featured food, music, a car show, and other family oriented activities.
