The Cobre Consolidated Schools Board of Education met on Monday and discussed various items including the status of ongoing maintenance of facilities. According to the Grant County Beat, Deputy Superintendent George Peru, reported the following: roof leaks are being repaired at Snell Middle School, Hurley, and Bayard Elementary; Cobre High is having problems with their heating, ventilation and air conditioning system; the new dishwasher at Central Elementary is up and running; and the geothermal system at Snell Middle School is not working properly. The current band-aid fixes are being made to keep up the ratings at Cobre schools to 100 to facilitate funding for news schools.
The Luna County Cooperative Extension Service has organized a Cattle Herd Management Workshop set for Thursday, September 19th. Presenters will be Boehringer Ingelheim, Purina, Southwest Veterinary Clinic, and the Luna County Extension Service. Various topics will be covered, including fetal programming and bovine respiratory disease. The cooperative extension service provides the community with practical, research based knowledge and programs to improve quality of life. Areas of impact include: 4-H Youth Development; Agriculture and Horticulture; and Health & Family Well-Being. The Cattel Herd Management Workshop and dinner will run from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. on Thursday, Sept. 19th, at La Fonda Restaurant, located at 601 East Pine Street in Deming. Today, September 11th is officially recognized as Patriot’s Day, a national day of mourning and remembrance for the victims of the terrorist attacks on September 11th, 2001. The flag of the United States is flown at half-mast at the White House and on all U.S. government buildings and establishments throughout the world; flags are also encouraged to be displayed on individual American homes. Patriot Day is not a federal holiday; schools and businesses remain open in observance of the occasion, although memorial ceremonies for the victims are often held. An observance of Patriot’s Day was held at noon today in Silver City at Gough Park.
