Early Sunday morning, at approximately 1:08 A.M., an inmate was discovered to be unconscious by Grant County Detention Center staff members. Inmate, Fernando Rodriguez, has appeared to have attempted to hang himself, and despite medical staff performing CPR, and EMS arriving in 10 minutes, Mr. Rodriguez could not be revived and was pronounced deceased at 1:50 A.M. Mr. Rodriguez was a Silver City resident, and was booked into the Grant County Detention Center on the evening of September 8th.
An investigation conducted by the Attorney General’s Office, Internet Crimes Against Children, and the New Mexico State Police, has revealed that 23-year old, Timothy Marquez, of Bayard, has been involved in various child pornography activities. A cybertip to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children alerted officials that pornographic material involving juveniles was being downloaded into an account associated with Marquez in Bayard. So far, Marquez has been charged with over 50 counts ranging from human trafficking and sexual exploitation of children. He is scheduled to appear in the Grant County Magistrate Court for a preliminary hearing on September 26th.
The Luna County Health Council is inviting the community a Health Fair this Saturday from 9:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M., at Luna County Courthouse Park. This year’s event celebrates good health by featuring a “Velcro Wall”, health and safety information, music, refreshments, outdoor games, fitness presentations, and door prizes. In addition, the public is invited to join in a “Recovery Awareness Walk” beginning at 8:00 A.M. at the Deming Visitor Center, located at 800 East Pine Street. The Luna Council Health Council is a coalition of local health care providers, community organizations, volunteers and educators, that address health care issues in Luna County.
Today commemorates the 17th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks at the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and the crashing of highjacked United Airlines Flight 93 near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
