Here’s a look at today’s headlines:

 

The Silver City Library and the Silver City Friends of the Library invite the public to celebrate National Friends of the Library Week, October 16th through 22nd. Residents are encouraged to visit the library next week, during regular business hours and learn how the group contributes to help keep the Library and its services available to all community residents.  Funds raised by “The Friends of the Library”, supports children and adult programs which are open and free to the public, in addition to supplementing the Library’s budget for staff training, equipment and furniture costs. “The Friends of the Silver City Public Library” was established in 1992, and is a non-profit 501c3 organization that has raised over $375,000 for the library to date.

 

There was an officer-involved shooting last Friday afternoon involving New Mexico State Police responding to a domestic disturbance on Gale Street in Lordsburg. The suspect, Winston Ford, allegedly fired at officers, striking a patrol vehicle followed by an officer returning fire at the suspect, and striking him. The suspect was later transported to University Medical Center in El Paso via air ambulance. The incident is being further investigated by the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau.

 

In observance of National Fire Prevention Week, The Santa Clara Fire Department will be hosting an open house to “meet and greet” fire chief, JoeAdam Gallegos, tomorrow from 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon. In addition to the community open house, students from Central Elementary will be visiting the fire station and treated to viewing equipment and fire trucks.

 

Elena Williams, a senior at Deming High School, has earned a commendation by the National Merit Scholarship Program. The “National Merit Scholarship Program” is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. Of the 1.6 million entrants, Elena placed in the top 50,000. Each September, these high scorers are notified through their schools that they have qualified as either a Commended Student or Semifinalist. Although Commended Students do not continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships, some of these students do become candidates for Special Scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses.
