Silver City Fire Department responded to a structure fire late Friday afternoon at 1835 Little Walnut Road. An occupied home and two storage sheds were completely destroyed. There were no reported injuries and no cause has been determined.
The Southern New Mexico State Fair and Rodeo Scholarship Program has awarded Riley Brabson, a senior at Cliff High School, a $750.00 scholarship. Out of the many applicants from Southern New Mexico, Riley met all the necessary qualifications and was interviewed by a panel of judges organized by the Southern New Mexico Fair. Riley is a member of the Cliff 4-H and FFA, has maintained a 3.8 grade point average, has successfully shown rabbits at the Southern New Mexico Fair for five years, and wishes to attend college to earn a degree in elementary education. Congratulations, Riley Brabson!
Fire personnel reported smoke on Friday, October 20th and is from lightning as a result of thunderstorms that passed through the Gila National Forest on Thursday, October 19th. The Eagle Fire is located northwest of Eagle Peak Lookout and is at approximately 1/10 acres. The Peak Fire is located northwest of Eagle Peak Lookout and is at approximately 10 acres. Both fires are burning in the old 1995 HB Fire burn scar. The fires are moving through downed logs and are cleaning up snags and woody debris within this burn scar. Reserve Ranger District fire staff will be monitoring these fires as they clean up dead and down material on the forest floor.
The Second Annual “Buddy Walk” to increase awareness of Down Syndrome, took place on Saturday at Gough Park in Silver City. The event was hosted by The Arc of New Mexico’s Family Support Network of Silver City and Deming and in addition had the assistance of 50 volunteers from around the area. Activities included a dance competition, rock painting, bean bag toss and participation from several vendors. The event concluded with a raffle drawing and a release of balloons in honor of those who have passed away.
Two Deming High School students qualified from the state of New Mexico for” The Wendy’s High School Heisman Scholarship”. Elena Williams and Abel Chavez, will receive a patch from Wendy’s signifying their accomplishment as New Mexico school winners. K’Dayl Looney, of Cliff High School and Eleanor Cano-Linson, of Hot Springs High in Truth or Consequences, were among the 20 state finalists who have qualified for the national award and the $10,000. The Wendy’s High School Heisman Scholarship was created by Wendy’s founder, Dave Thomas, in 1994. Inspired by his desire to celebrate the outstanding achievements of youth in America, he launched the Wendy’s High School Heisman program that serves as a joint effort between Wendy’s and the Heisman Trophy Trust.
