New Mexico Senator, Howie Morales has been invited to attend the 2017 National Conference of State Legislatures “International Learning Tour” this month in Toronto, Ontario. The tour will bring together a bipartisan group of twelve leading education state legislators to study school leadership policies. Senator Morales is one of only 11 U.S. state legislators to take part in this conference.
Western New Mexico University has expanded collaboration with 4 latin American institutions during the first “International Meeting of Universities” last week. The conference was organized by WNMU Language Institute Director, Manuel Rodriguez, and included institutions from both Mexico and Costa Rica. The event was created to support the launching of an ecotourism program and featured seminars focused on the educational tourism industry both locally and in Latin America. Discussions also included dual degree programs and a public signing of agreements between WNMU and the Pan American Language Center and The Technical University of Paquime .
According U.S Forest Service, over 82,000 acres of the Gila National forest were treated during the fiscal year 2017, that included over 14,000 acres of prescribed burning accomplished in both non-wildland and wildland urban interface areas, and over 68,000 acres of land treated for wildland fires. The Gila National Forest is considered a frequent-fire forest which consists of mixed-conifer and ponderosa pine.
There is a first come, first serve, Senior Flu Immunization on Tuesday, Oct. 24th from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m at the Deming Senior Center, located at 800 S. Granite Street. Seniors are requested to bring proof of insurance coverage whether it be commercial, Medicare, or Medicaid. There is no co-pay and you may qualify for vaccination at no cost. Seniors that are homebound may receive service by calling Alexandra at (575) 546-8823.
