Seventeen New Mexico nonprofits are now able to expand Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) learning for students across the state after receiving more than $150,000 in grants from the PNM Resources Foundation. In a recent release from PNM, each nonprofit grant recipient demonstrated educational efforts in building vibrant communities throughout New Mexico and received between $5,000 and $15,000 for programs supporting STEAM education. Locally, the Asombro Institute for Science Education in Deming was awarded $10,400 to fund 5th grade Science Interns training so they can teach younger students at their school. In Silver City, Aldo Leopold Charter School Foundation, Inc. was awarded $9,265 to fund a Mobile STREAM Lab for middle school students in Silver City. In addition, PNM and the PNM Resources Foundation have awarded more than $23 million in the past 6 years to nonprofit organizations.
The Western New Mexico University Foundation and the family of Tadeusz Westawic, signed an endowed scholarship agreement over the summer that establishes a fund in memory of Westawic. According to a news release from WNMU, Foundation Executive Director Jodi Edens-Crocker said,” With an initial gift contribution of $15,000, the family endowed this scholarship to help keep alive Tadeusz’ spirit of generosity, faith in education, and belief in the magic of curiosity.” Westawic, who was also known as Tom Hillman-West, taught GED math classes at WNMU, helping adults get the educations they needed to move forward in life. The new Tadeusz Westawic Memorial Scholarship is designed for non-traditional WNMU students starting or returning to college or working on a degree for a second career.
The New Mexico Department of Veterans Services (DVS) will be making outreach stops in southern and southwestern New Mexico to assist veterans and widows of veterans with filing for or upgrading their VA or state veteran’s benefits. Deming has been scheduled for three stops; October 31st, November 6th and December 4th at the Veterans Assistance Center in Deming.
