A former Town of Silver City employee will be going to trial on charges of allegedly embezzling $12,000 from the town by using her city credit card for personal purposes. LeAnn Misquez, was employed with the Town of Silver City as a purchasing agent from 2012 through December of 2016. The alleged acts she has been charged with occurred from July 2016 through October of 2016, according to the criminal complaint.
The Deming Duck Race committee is seeking community involvement for next year’s event by announcing a 2019 Deming Duck Race logo contest. The theme of next year’s event is “Galaxy Duck – Racing thru the Stars.” The contest is open to artists of all ages. Contest submissions must be received by November 30th and there will be a $100 prize. For specific contest rules and further information, call the Deming Chamber of Commerce at 575-546-2674.

The “Discover Hidalgo” celebration is this Saturday, at the Hidalgo County Fairgrounds, in Lordsburg, New Mexico. The celebration offers a wide variety of events and competitions. Arc of New Mexico Family Support Networks of Silver City and Deming invite everyone to the 3rd Annual Buddy Walk on Saturday, from 10:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. at Gough Park in Silver City. Celebrate, educate, and advocate for Down Syndrome Awareness and enjoy activities for the entire family. Registration is free and the event opens at 10:00 A.M, with the actual Buddy Walk starting at 12 noon.
Celebrate National Archaeology Day at the Mimbres Culture Heritage Site on Saturday, from 10:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. The Mimbres Culture Heritage Site is located off Hwy 35 between mile marker 3 and 4 on Sage Drive. For more information, call 575-536-3333.

There is a Chicano Street Fest in Old James Stadium at Western New Mexico University in Silver City this Friday starting at 5:00 P.M. and at 12 Noon on Saturday, featuring a special Car Show. There will be plenty of live music, arts & crafts, games and prizes, and of course, plenty of food. Admission is free.
