RURAL LAND OWNERSHIP TOPIC OF FORUM AT WNMU LIBRARY

Silver City – The debate over ownership of rural lands will be the focus of a panel discussion on Thursday, October 24 at 5:30p.m. at the WNMU Miller Library.

Leading the panel discussion will be special guest Yvette Herrel, New Mexico State Representative representing District 51. Other panelists include Alex Thal, Hugh B McKeen and Paul Gessing of the Rio Grande Foundation.

Recent movement to transfer public lands from the federal government to western states has earned protest by land rights organizations.

Representative Herrel will give a presentation on legislation that was introduced in Santa Fe to address the federal government’s overreach in land ownership issues. She will provide an update on proposed legislation for the upcoming year.

New Mexico has over 45% of public land managed by the federal government. More than half of the revenues generated from royalties are being sent to the federal government and are not staying within the states. The debate centers around management of these lands and were revenue generated from royalties is collected.

More information regarding land ownership legislation is available at www.americanlandscouncil.org. A potluck meal will be offered after the meeting.
