Recreation update for north zone, Gila National Forest

 

SILVER CITY, NM; May 17, 2016 – For Immediate Release – The North Zone of the Gila National Forest consists of the Quemado, Reserve and Glenwood Ranger Districts. Here is the North Zone recreation information for the season.

 

Quemado:

Quemado Lake Recreation Area is open for the summer recreation season.  The Recreation area has two developed campgrounds; Pinon and Juniper. Both have full amenities and the fees are $10/day and $15/day, respectively. Other open developed sites on the district include El Caso sites, Armijo Springs, Valles Tio Vinces, and Head of the Ditch; these camping facilities are free. There are two group sites in the Quemado Lake Recreation Area.  These sites can accommodate groups of approximately 30 and 75 individuals. Group sites can be reserved by contacting the Quemado district office at 575-773-4578. All other campsites are on a first-come, first-served basis.

 

Reserve:

Dipping Vat Campground is open with full amenities. South Fork Negrito remains open on the south side of the road but the gates remain closed on the north side due to flood hazard concerns. Willow Creek and Ben Lilly, Aeroplane Mesa, and Apache Creek are all open as well. The Bursum Road, NM Hwy 159, from Mogollon to Willow Creek is open to the public.

 

Glenwood:

The Catwalk will be opening Saturday, May 28 at 10:00 a.m. The Cosmic Campground (eight miles north Alma, NM) is open and will be hosting a dark sky sanctuary dedication event Saturday, June 4. All other campgrounds and day use sites on the Glenwood Ranger District are currently open for business.
