Here’s a look at today’s headlines:
The Silver High School Lady Colts captured their eighth straight Class AAAA State Softball Championship last Friday in Albuquerque. The team powered through the tournament by remaing undefeated and beating Bernalillo High School in the first game of the championship round with a score of 13 to 1. Congratulations Lady Colts!
Tomorrow, Cobre Consolidated Schools will be holding a Pre-K Registration Event for the 2018-19 school year from 3:00 to 6:00 P.M. at the Bayard Training Center located at 100 Park Street next to Bayard Elementary. Children who are eligible for the 3- year old Pre-K Program need to be 3 years of age by August 31st, 2018. Children who are eligible for the 4- year old Pre-K program need to be 4 years old by August 31, 2018. This event will be for all the Cobre District Elementary Schools. Documents needed for registration are: official state birth certificate; updated immunization records; and proof of residency (water or electric bill).

The Silver Consolidated School District will conduct kindergarten registration for all kindergartners this Wednesday from 8:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. at Sixth Street Elementary located at 405 West Sixth Street in Silver City. Kindergarten students must be five years old prior to September 1st. Parents/Guardians must present birth certificate and immunization records in order to enroll their child in kindergarten. The Silver City Grant County Chamber of Commerce has contracted with NovoPrint USA to publish a foldout map of Grant County, New Mexico. There will be smaller inset maps of Silver City, Hurley, Bayard and Santa Clara. Besides the fold-out printed map, the electronic version will be available on the Chamber of Commerce’s website at silver city dot org. The advertising sales representative from NovoPrint for this project is John Kindall who is working on behalf of the Silver City Grant County Chamber of Commerce. Western New Mexico University held its Spring commencement ceremony on Friday in Old James Stadium. The 265 graduates who walked in the ceremony, heard from Commencement Speaker, Antonia Coello Novello, a medical doctor holding both a master’s and a doctorate in public health. She was the first female, and first Hispanic, U.S. Surgeon General. The university granted 350 degrees comprised of 72 associate degrees, 145 bachelor’s degrees, 99 master’s degrees, 25 graduate certificates and 18 fast-track certificates. Congratulations to all the graduates!
