Here’s a look at today’s news:
Silver City Police officers were dispatched Saturday afternoon in reference to an alleged assault with a knife, that occurred in the area of Kelly Street and Broadway. According to the police report, Sammy Chavez, of Silver City, assaulted two male witnesses and ran southward through Big Ditch Park to eventually emerge on Mill Road. Chavez, was arrested and booked into the Grant County Detention Center and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
According to the result of the Big Burro Road Decommissioning Project, the Gila National Forest has announced changes to the motorized trails use in the Big Burro Mountains. The change consists of motorized trails for vehicles less than 50 inches in width, to motorized trails for vehicles greater than 50 inches in width on the trails designated on the map of the Big Burro Mountains. The new Motorized Vehicle Use Map will be available at the Silver City Ranger District Supervisor’s Office in Silver City.
Joan Cox, a volunteer at the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument, has been honored for reaching a total of 4500 service hours at the park. Joan, has served as a volunteer at many other parks, including Everglades National Park, Yellowstone National Park and White Sands National Monument. In New Mexico, she has volunteered at City of Rocks and Elephant Butte. Congratulations, Joan Cox and thank you for your community service.
Michael Chavez, Deming Public Schools Federal Programs Director, has been appointed as superintendent for Hatch Valley Public Schools. Chavez, has served the Deming Public Schools for 25 years by focusing on bilingual and Title 3 programs that help ensure that English learners, including immigrant children and youth attain English proficiency. Chavez’s last day will be May 3rd and Deming Public Schools will begin searching for a replacement.
A cleanup project was launched last week from the Silver City’s Murray Ryan Visitors Center parking area comprised of area residents, Western New Mexico University athletes, and students from Aldo Leopold Charter School. The project was organized by the Gila Resources Information Project and the Silver City Watershed Keepers in recognition of “World Water Day.” The volunteers hiked down into “The Big Ditch” and picked up tires, construction debris and other waste that filled 20 large bags.
