Congratulations to La Plata Middle School student Jaelynn Cruz for being named the 7th Grade Student of the Month. Jaelynn was recognized for her outstanding effort, academic dedication, and for her consistently positive attitude. She is also known for being respectful and helpful to her peers. The school community is proud of her achievements and looks forward to her continued success.

The Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Chapter 1 recently hosted a successful fundraising event at Ft. Bayard, with the following winners: Lita Perez of Silver City won the 1st prize, a .243 Ruger hunting rifle; Sonny Lorea of California, formerly of Grant County, claimed the 2nd prize, an electric smoker; and Dale Russel of Eagle Eye Fencing received the 3rd prize, a $100 Walmart gift card. DAV Chapter 1 extends its gratitude to the generous supporters of southwest New Mexico, including the Rio Mimbres Armory, the Silver City Knights of Columbus, and Jim Lee Enterprises, whose contributions were instrumental in the success of the 2024-25 fundraising event.

This month, The Commons: Center for Food Security and Sustainability is recognizing Lillian Ogas and Susie Medina for their outstanding volunteer work. These dedicated women volunteer almost every week, contributing in countless ways, from packing bags for the Alimento School Food Partnership program to assisting in the Choose Your Own Pantry. Their consistent hard work, time, and energy have made a significant impact on the organization. The Commons is deeply grateful for their kindness and commitment, which truly make a difference in the community.
