Western New Mexico University recently held their spring graduation where 535 students earned degrees or certificates. WNMU awarded 106 Associate Degrees, 163 Bachelor’s Degrees, 148 Master’s Degrees and 67 Graduate Certificates. Additionally, 67 Baccalaureate students graduated with honors, earning a 3.5 GPA or higher including Itzela Darkenwald, Trent Jones and Stephen Lindsey who were entered into the “Student Hall of Fame”. Congratulations to all the graduates.
In coordination with Grant County, the City of Bayard, the Towns of Hurley and Silver City and the Village of Santa Clara are in the process of updating the Grant County Hazard Mitigation Plan. Grant County will hold public meetings regarding the plan to provide a project overview and to get the public’s input. The goal of the Plan Update is to minimize or eliminate the long-term risk to human life and property from known hazards through effective mitigation. To help slow down traffic, the Village of Santa Clara has installed Speed Indicators signs on both Maple Street and Fort Bayard Street. Due to school ending, the Splash Park opening and “Music in the Park” and school lunches beginning, the Village of Santa Clara wants to make sure residents adhere to the speed limit within the village. The goal of the Speed Indicators is to help make Santa Clara a safer place for not only children but all its residents.
The Bureau of Land Management Las Cruces District is seeking public comment for the final Recreation Area Management Plan and Environmental Assessment, Finding of No Significant Impact for the Gila Lower Box Area. The planning area includes the Gila Lower Box Wilderness Study Area, the Gila Lower Box Area of Critical Environmental Concern, and the Gila Lower Box Special Recreation Management Area. The plan proposes to help improve and enhance recreational use and experiences and protect cultural and biological resources. Public comment and input will be open until June 1st.
