Kick off your summer at the 10th Annual Aldo Leopold Kids Fishing Derby this Saturday, June 1st at Lake Roberts. The Mora National Fish Hatchery will stock Lake Roberts with retired Gila trout breeder stock for this event, so kids have a shot at catching a record-sized trout! Also, Smokey Bear will make an appearance to greet all his fans. This event is free and will run from 7:00 a.m. to noon. Prizes will be presented at the end of the event.
Congratulations to Grant County resident Walter Woodward who was recently awarded a Trade School program scholarship by The Grant County Copper Cowbells to attend the Southeast Lineman Training Center. After his training, Walter plans to return to Grant County to work as a lineman to help bridge the gap in the community and ensure the continued prosperity of the agricultural sector. The Grant County Copper Cowbells offers these scholarships to encourage the continuation of western heritage in all areas of agriculture and rural life.
As a reminder, The Bureau of Land Management Las Cruces District is still seeking public comment for the final Recreation Area Management Plan and Environmental Assessment, Finding of No Significant Impact for the Gila Lower Box Area. The planning area includes the Gila Lower Box Wilderness Study Area, the Gila Lower Box Area of Critical Environmental Concern, and the Gila Lower Box Special Recreation Management Area. The plan proposes to help improve and enhance recreational use and experiences and protect cultural and biological resources. Public comment and input will be open until June 1st. The Give Grandly event, which took place earlier this month, had 1,627 donors that raised a total of $253,593 to help nonprofit organizations. There were 65 organizations in Grant County who received donations, some of which included; The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Silver City’s Border Justice Project who received $26,330, Gila Resources Information Project received $11,275, Upper Gila Watershed Alliance received $8,180 and El Refugio, Inc. received $6,925. In Deming News: The Deming Public Schools Construction Department will be working on several projects starting this summer and will continue throughout the year. Construction at the Smith Administration Building will start on June 1st and continue through September 30th. During this time the Smith Gym and South Iron Street will be closed. The project will include removal of evaporating cooling units that will be replaced by HVAC units, as well as the installation of security cameras and fencing.
