Silver Consolidated Schools has announced Demetrio “Artie” Sanchez as the new Athletic Director for Silver High School. Mr. Sanchez brings experience and leadership skills to the program, having recently served as the Assistant Principal and Athletic Director at Cobre Consolidated Schools. He also holds a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership and has been an influential educator and coach for over two decades ensuring students thrive in a supportive environment.  

In honor of Memorial Day, Fort Bayard National Cemetery will be placing Memorial flags at each gravesite to honor all veterans who paid the ultimate sacrifice. The placement of flags will take place on May 25th from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and volunteers are needed. Those interested in volunteering to help place flags can show up anytime between those hours. 

New Mexico Clean and Beautiful Youth Interns have been working on revitalizing the Big Ditch Park area. Interns have been busy removing graffiti, litter cleanup, weeding, watering and weatherproofing all of the park’s picnic tables. This weekend, they will be assisting Enchanted Touch Landscaping with an erosion control project. Work on the Big Ditch Park Revitalization Project is expected to continue this summer. 

The Gila National Forest will be celebrating the centennial anniversary of the Gila Wilderness May 29th through June 2nd. The events will start off with a speaker series developed by the forest service and a collaboration of community members that will feature a number of diverse panel experts. The week is set to be packed with activities and events highlighting the value of Wilderness in our modern lives and will give thanks for the foresight of Aldo Leopold and Forest Service leadership in designating the world’s first area; the Gila Wilderness, which was created June 3rd, 1924. Congratulations to Lordsburg High School Junior, November Foust, who recently won the Congressional Art Competition 2024 for District 2 in New Mexico. Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in each congressional district. November is the third student in a row to win this honor from Lordsburg High School and the sixth student to attend the event. Her pastel painting will be displayed in the capitol for a year with other artwork from students all around the country.
