The Grant County Chamber of Commerce is inviting all community members to join them at their May Luncheon where they will have guest speaker, Fire Chief Milo Lambert of The Town of Silver City Fire Department. The luncheon will take place tomorrow, May 2nd from 11:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Grant County Veterans Memorial Business and Conference Center. The Historical Society of New Mexico recently honored Silver City residents Dr. John O. Bell and Susan M. Berry for their contributions to New Mexico history. Dr. Bell received the 2024 L. Bradford Prince Award for his significant work in the field of historic preservation in New Mexico and for devoting his time to the preservation of historic Fort Bayard. Mrs. Berry, who is the retired Director of the Silver City Museum and a local historian, was honored with the 2024 Paul A.F. Walter Award for her outstanding service to the Historical Society of New Mexico (HSNM) and for her dedication to making the 2023 HSNM annual conference a great success. Congratulations to both Dr. Bell and Mrs. Berry. 

Luna County employees will be conducting a “County Cleanup” on May 3rd at 8:00 a.m. therefore, there may be a temporary interruption of services due to this event. During the Cobre Consolidated School Board Meeting, the Kiwanis Club of Silver City presented the students of the month awards to Ismael Dominguez and Iraceli Hinojosa. Mr. Dominguez is a senior at Cobre High School and was recognized for his 3.88 GPA and his dedication to cross country and baseball. Iraceli is a student at Snell Middle School who was recognized for her 3.87 GPA and for always being conscientious of others. Congratulations to both students.

In celebration of the 10th Anniversary of the Organ Mountains Desert Peaks as a National Monument, the Bureau of Land Management Las Cruces District management team has declared that there will be no recreational day use fees collected for the entire month of May.
