WNMU is launching a new online Family Nurse Practitioner graduate certificate program this fall. Designed for working nurses with a master’s degree, the 27-credit program can be completed in just over a year. It’s especially suited for those serving rural communities. In Deming news, the Deming Arts Council is showcasing the talent of local youth with an Art Exhibition featuring students from Deming High School. The show runs April 2nd through 29th at the Deming Arts Center, open weekdays from 10 to 4 and Saturdays from 10 to 1. A special event is set for April 13th from 1 to 2:30 p.m., where the public can meet the student artists, enjoy live music, and view student films. The Deming Arts Center is located at 100 South Gold Avenue.

Silver City Mayor Ken Ladner cast the tie-breaking vote last night to reject an ordinance that would have created a citizens advisory board for the police department. After nearly two hours of public comment both for and against the idea, the council was split 2-2. Ladner said the advisory board would interfere with the city manager’s authority, as outlined in the town charter. He added that Police Chief Freddie Portillo is preparing a new initiative to address community concerns. The group behind the proposal, Citizens for Safety and Community, says their efforts will continue.
