The Gila National Forest has announced that the Lake Roberts Boat Launch and adjacent picnic area will be temporarily closed for public safety tomorrow, Thursday, June 5 from 6 AM to 4 PM. Crews from Gila National Forest, Wilderness Ranger District will cut hazard trees near the parking area and trim back excess vegetation in preparation for Saturday’s Aldo Leopold Kids’ Fishing Derby. This annual fishing derby begins at 7:00 a.m. and wraps up at noon this Saturday. Event activities will be set up in the peninsula area east of the boat launch, rendering it unavailable for parking. Parking at the boat launch will be limited and preferably left available for people with disabilities or trailer turnaround. Ample parking for participants is available in the day use picnic area. A path will be cleared to ensure ease of pedestrian access between the picnic area and lake shoreline.
In New Mexico news:
Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has signed an executive order to expand the Dolly Parton Imagination Library program, ensuring that every child in New Mexico from birth to age five has access to free, high-quality books delivered monthly to their home. Backed by an additional $1 million in funding for fiscal year 2026, the expanded program will reach 30,000 more children across all zip codes in the state, offering each child up to 60 books by the time they turn five. To date, the initiative has distributed nearly 2 million books to families statewide. This latest investment builds upon a grassroots effort launched in 2010 in Grant County, where the program initially served just eight children.
