Cobre High School was recently recognized by the New Mexico Public Education Department for its rising graduation rate, which reached 87.2%, exceeding the state average. School leaders credit the success to expanded dual-credit opportunities, career and technical education programs, work-based learning experiences, and targeted academic support. The school’s strong sense of community, student support systems, and focus on engagement have played a key role in helping more students graduate successfully.
Luna County officials are reminding certain business owners that annual business registration fees are due on or before July 1. The requirement applies to individuals conducting business within Luna County outside the incorporated boundaries of the City of Deming and the Village of Columbus. Officials noted that several exemptions apply, including those engaged solely in farming and ranching, businesses with annual gross sales, trades, or exchanges of less than $500 within Luna County, charitable and nonprofit activities, and certain community event vendors as outlined in county ordinance.
The New Mexico Department of Veterans’ Services (NMDVS) recently honored 100-year-old World War II Lordsburg veteran Rudy Chavez, recognizing his military service and lifelong dedication to his community. Mr. Chavez served in major World War II campaigns, including the Battle of the Bulge, and received honors including the Silver Star and Purple Heart. NMDVS presented Mr. Chavez with a commemorative plaque and a New Mexico state flag flown over the State Capitol in his honor. New Mexico is investing $4.5 million in youth outdoor programs for Fiscal Year 2027 after demand for the state’s Outdoor Equity Fund exceeded available funding by more than 90 percent last year, surpassing available resources by $3.7 million. The investment will support opportunities that connect young people across New Mexico with outdoor experiences, including hiking, biking, camping, environmental education, cultural programs, conservation projects and workforce development initiatives.
